Two separate incident of tyre spiking on the N4 – in two different provinces – on the same night, has raised more concern over these incidents.

The Middelburg Observer reported that a woman was on Wednesday night targeted between the Bethal and Van Dyksdrift off-ramps on the N4. She fortunately made it to a filling station in the Mpumalanga town.

Meanwhile, in Gauteng, another spiking incident on the N4 was reported on the same night – this time near the Solomon Mahlangu off-ramp in Pretoria. The incident has left a family traumatised.

According to information from the Live Traffic Network, a family was travelling west on the N4 when the incident occured.

“It’s suspected that the vehicle was spiked before Solomon Mahlangu or at Solomon Mahlangu, heading towards town, taking the Simon Vermooten off-ramp.”

The family realised their vehicle had lost a tyre in what is suspected to be a spiking incident.

“One of our members noticed the vehicle travelling slow with hazards on and escorted the family to safety to the BP Garage at Simon Vermooten,” it said.

The family is traumatised, but safe.

Spiking hotspots in and around Pretoria:

•  The R21, between OR Tambo International Airport;
• N4 towards Pretoria, Donkerhoek area
• The R562, Olifantsfontein, N3, Leondale and Barry Marais
• N17 between Rondebult and Heidelberg Road

Motorists are advised not to stop when they suspect they have become a spiking victim, especially at night, and should instead drive on slowly to the nearest garage or police station.

• The N4 Mpumalanga to Pretoria between Solomon Mahlangu and Watermeyer off-ramp

• The N1 Polokwane N4 Mpumalanga interchange in Pretoria
