Police in Berea, KZN, are investigating cases of murder and attempted murder following an incident in which a woman was shot and killed, allegedly by her boyfriend, at a popular restaurant on Florida Road early this morning.

According to KZN SAPS spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, an off-duty police officer allegedly went to a restaurant where his girlfriend worked and, when she came out to meet him, he drew his service pistol and fired shots at her.

In the process, patrolling metro police intercepted, and the suspect was wounded. He later died in hospital.

Two other men who were caught in the crossfire sustained gunshot wounds and are in hospital.

“The victim ran back inside the restaurant and the man followed her as he continued shooting,” says Netshiunda.

ALS Paramedics’ Garreth Jamieson says paramedics responded to the shooting just after 01:00.

“On arrival, paramedics were shown to where four people were lying [on the floor]. Three males and one female had been shot. Unfortunately, the female, believed to be in her 30s, had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, and there was nothing paramedics could do for her. She was declared deceased on the scene.

“The alleged suspect was in critical condition, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to hospital where he passed away a short while later.

“Two other men sustained gunshot wounds to their upper bodies and were transported to a nearby hospital,” says Jamieson.

According to the police, the motive of the killing is unknown, however, domestic-related issues can’t be ruled out.
