Patient dies in freak hospital fire in Durban
Firefighters evacuated patients in a hospital's general ward, however, one patient was not evacuated in time and perished in the blaze.
One patient has been confirmed dead after a fire broke out at Clairwood Hospital in Durban early this morning.
The incident occurred around 02:30 in the hospital’s general ward.
Divisional commander for the eThekwini Fire Department Justin Bateman says the fire spread rapidly throughout the block.
“When we arrived, the fire was already spreading on the roof. Firefighters began evacuating people, but unfortunately, one woman was caught in the fire and died. We managed to stop it from spreading to other buildings. The cause is still under investigation, and the police will investigate further,” adds Bateman.
