Following a fire at one of the offices at the Barberton Police Station yesterday, Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Jackie Macie has called on SAPS to thoroughly investigate the incident.

Lowvelder previously reported that several police dockets were destroyed when a storeroom caught fire. Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli stated that a police member noticed smoke coming from the storeroom and called for assistance.

In an update, Mpumalanga News reported that the MEC expressed concern that the incident could undermine existing cases and create anxiety among community members, particularly those who have lodged serious complaints at the station.

“Without pre-empting the outcome of the probe into the matter, we want those who are responsible to face the full consequences of their actions. Although there are many hardworking members, these developments may undermine the great work that the police were doing to stabilise crime in the province,” he said.

Macie urged the community to remain calm and allow the police to conduct a thorough investigation.

He encouraged community members not to fear exposing any corrupt individuals within their mid, while urging officers to stay committed to their duties and loyal to their badge.
