Paramedic injured when violence erupts at scene of Gauteng crash

An emergency services worker was transported to hospital after being hit with a metal object at an accident scene.

A man was attacked and a Mogale Response Services (MRS) paramedic was injured following a two-vehicle crash on the R28, under the railway bridge towards Kagiso, over the weekend.

In an article published by Krugersdrop News, MRS public relations officer Dale Mac Rae says the crash occurred on Sunday evening.

“Upon arrival, paramedics witnessed a man attacking another individual who had allegedly robbed people from one of the vehicles involved in the crash.

“The attacker fled the scene and attempted to hide in the ambulance. Unfortunately, during the commotion, a paramedic was struck with a metal object while trying to evade the attack. The paramedic sustained hand injuries and was transported to hospital,” says Mac Rae.

She says first responders face significant challenges when attending emergencies and being attacked shouldn’t be one of them. Such incidents not only endanger the lives of emergency personnel but also hinder their ability to assist in life-threatening situations, she adds.

“This behaviour is unacceptable and is strongly condemned by MRS and all emergency services.

“We urge anyone with information about this incident to contact the police,” says Mac Rae.
