Commuters making use of Rea Vaya services have been left stranded as bus services have been temporarily suspended.

Rea Vaya bus services have been suspended until further notice due to two drivers being shot and killed in separate incidents in Mapetla and Protea Glen in Soweto last night.

According to an article published by Soweto Urban, the police are investigating cases of murder.

According to Gauteng Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, the first shooting occurred when a driver stopped at a traffic light along Wildchestnut Street in Protea. He was shot and killed by unknown gunmen.

In the second shooting, in Tshithuthune Street in Mapetla, an eyewitness reported hearing gunshots and taking cover.

After the shooting stopped, the eyewitness discovered that the driver had been shot and killed.

Two Rea Vaya bus drivers tragically lost their lives in separate shooting incidents in Soweto.

The eyewitness attempted to drive the bus but crashed into a wall. Fortunately, the passenger sustained no injuries.

The motive behind the shootings is unknown. Police are following up on all leads.

The violence has prompted Rea Vaya to halt operations for safety reasons. Management has advised passengers to use alternative public transport until the situation is resolved.

The suspension of bus services is expected to cause disruptions to commuters who rely on Rea Vaya to get to work and school.

Passengers are advised to make alternative arrangements to minimise the impact of the disruption.

Soweto Urban will provide updates as more information is released.
