Eskom announces stage 3 power cuts for weekend
Eskom says several breakdowns and depleted emergency reserves to prevent load-shedding during the week are to blame blackouts.
Residents must brace themselves for power cuts over the weekend after Eskom announced Stage 3 load-shedding will be in effect from 14:00 until 05:00 on Monday.
The power utility says it has lost 2 700MW generation power in the past 14 hours.
This includes:
- Taking Koeberg Unit 2 offline again
- Two units at Kusile Power Station affected by sub-optimal coal due to bad weather
- Higher levels of planned maintenance to prepare for winter and to meet environmental and regulation requirements.
Eskom has been relying on emergency reserves to keep the lights on during the week, which must be replenished.
Eskom said it planned, by deploying extra engineering resources to repair the units currently offline, to have 6 200MW restored to the grid by Monday.
Eskom implements Stage 3 loadshedding from 14:00 today and anticipates to be in this mode until Monday at 05:00, following 98% availability of power supply, due to loss of 2700MW over the past 14 hours. To replenish emergency reserves over the weekend –
