Eskom announces stage 3 power cuts for weekend

Eskom says several breakdowns and depleted emergency reserves to prevent load-shedding during the week are to blame blackouts.

Residents must brace themselves for power cuts over the weekend after Eskom announced Stage 3 load-shedding will be in effect from 14:00 until 05:00 on Monday.

The power utility says it has lost 2 700MW generation power in the past 14 hours.

This includes:

  • Taking Koeberg Unit 2 offline again
  • Two units at Kusile Power Station affected by sub-optimal coal due to bad weather
  • Higher levels of planned maintenance to prepare for winter and to meet environmental and regulation requirements.

Eskom has been relying on emergency reserves to keep the lights on during the week, which must be replenished.

Eskom said it planned, by deploying extra engineering resources to repair the units currently offline, to have 6 200MW restored to the grid by Monday.
