5 arrested after gun battle in Ladysmith CBD

Five men were arrested after an attempted robbery in Ladysmith ended in a gun battle with private security.

This morning, five men stormed into a shop at the Plaza in the Ladysmith CBD and attempted to rob the place.

According to the Ladysmith Gazette, thanks to the swift response of reaction wardens from NN Alarms, the suspects’ plans were, however, quickly foiled.

As the robbers tried to make their getaway, armed NN Alarms reaction wardens sprang into action, chasing one of the men through the streets. The man, desperate to escape, opened fire on his pursuers in Forbes Street and the security vehicle was hit a number of times.

According to a trusted source, the vehicle was hit 14 times.

The reaction wardens retaliated and, in the ensuing gun battle, the fleeing suspect was shot. When police arrived at the scene, the man was found seriously wounded and lying in a pool of blood. He received medical attention from EMS paramedics before being taken to hospital.

According to local police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan, all five suspects – aged between 33 and 44 years old – are now in custody. In addition, a vehicle used during the crime, ammunition and two 9mm pistols were recovered during the arrests.
