Manhunt underway after motorist gunned down on N1 in Limpopo
Authorities are urging witnesses to come forward as investigators piece together the circumstances behind a roadside shooting.
Police have launched an intensive manhunt after a 38-year-old motorist was shot and killed along the N1 South near the Ben Lavin turn-off in Limpopo on Saturday night.
Polokwane Review reports that police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba says the victim was travelling with three passengers from Gauteng to Musina when the vehicle broke down at around 19:00.
“While they were awaiting assistance, another car stopped nearby. Two unknown men emerged, pretending to offer help, and asked for the driver of the broken-down car.
“Once the driver was identified, one of the suspects drew a firearm and fired several shots at him. The other passengers fled in different directions to escape harm. The gunmen then returned to their vehicle and sped away from the scene,” says Mashaba.
The victim was declared dead by emergency services when they arrived.
His identity has not yet been released, pending further investigation.
A murder case has been opened, with the motive still unclear. Police have appealed to the public for information that could assist in the arrest of the suspects.
Anyone with knowledge of the incident is urged to contact Detective Sergeant Musubi Rudzani at 082 565 9070 or 082 210 7639, Crime Stop on 08600 10111, or submit tips via the MySAPS app.
Investigations are ongoing.
