Watch: Fire breaks out at Rietvlei Zoo Farm entertainment area, south of Johannesburg
Thick smoke from an early morning fire led to the temporary closure of a nearby street, while firefighters worked to contain the blaze.
A fire broke out at the Rietvlei Zoo Farm entertainment area in the south of Johannesburg shortly after 07:00 this morning, forcing the temporary closure of a nearby road due to thick smoke.
Alberton Record reports that Disaster and Emergency Management Services spokesperson William Ntladi confirmed they received a call at around 07:10, alerting them to the blaze.

“When our teams arrived, the entertainment area was already well covered with fire. Smoke had spread across the road, covering vehicles, and for safety reasons, the road had to be temporarily closed,” Ntladi says.
He adds that the upper level of the double-story entertainment area was most affected.

Firefighters managed to bring the flames under control and, at the time of publishing, were damping down hotspots.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established.

No casualties have been reported.
