Limpopo dagga bust: Police seize R580k stash and R2.7m in vehicles
A midnight raid in Ga-Magongwa dealt a major blow to drug traffickers as suspects abandoned vehicles and fled on foot.
The Mahwelereng police in Limpopo, working jointly with the Waterberg Flying Squad and BMO Security, recovered 29 bags of dagga and four high-value vehicles during a midnight operation in Ga-Magongwa Village on Tuesday.
Polokwane Review reports that Limpopo police say the raid followed intelligence about three vehicles transporting dagga along the N11 from Mpumalanga to Mokopane.
“Officers tracked the convoy until it entered an unfinished house at Ga-Magongwa Village. A fourth vehicle later joined them. When the suspects spotted the marked police vehicle, they fled on foot,” says Limpopo police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba.
On inspection, police discovered four vehicles on the property, three of them loaded with 29 bags of dagga weighing 40 to 50kg each.
Ledwaba says the recovered vehicles include:
- A white Toyota Hilux, valued at R700 000
- A dark grey Toyota Fortuner, valued at R600 000
- A gold Toyota Land Cruiser, valued at R1.2m
- A white Hyundai IX35, valued at R300 000.
“The seized dagga is estimated to be worth R580 000. An inquiry docket of possession and dealing in drugs has been opened,” he says.
Meanwhile, the provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, welcomed the recovery, praising the swift action of the teams involved.
