6 die as vehicle plunges into Zonkizizwe River in Ekurhuleni
Emergency services recovered a submerged Mazda sedan on the R550, with all six occupants declared dead at the scene.
Tragedy struck on the R550 last night when a Mazda sedan veered off the road and into the Zonkizizwe River in Ekurhuleni.
Alberton Record reports that Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (Dems) responded to a distress call reporting a motor vehicle accident at about 20:26.
According to the Dems spokesperson, when arriving at the scene, Ekurhuleni firefighters found an overturned car submerged in the river.
Emergency personnel worked to retrieve the vehicle, which they recovered using towing equipment.
Tragically, six bodies were inside the vehicle and declared dead at the scene by Gauteng Emergency Medical Services.
The identities of the deceased have not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin. The cause of the accident is not yet known.
“The scene was handed to law enforcement agencies for a thorough investigation,” a Dems official confirmed.
Authorities urge anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
