SA academics invited to apply for US research grant

South African university faculty and researchers can apply for a Fulbright grant to conduct advanced research at a US institution.

The Fulbright South African Research Scholar Programme is offering South African university faculty or research institute professionals the opportunity to conduct research in their field of expertise at a US academic or research institution for three to nine months.

According to The Witness, the programme provides grants that allow scholars to carry out advanced research in their field, with the aim of strengthening academic programmes and curricula at their home institutions.

Applicants must hold a doctorate or equivalent terminal degree, have a proven record of teaching, research, and publication, and be South African citizens or permanent residents with at least five years of residency.

Nationals with dual South African/US citizenship are not eligible.

Preference will be given to candidates with at least three years of university teaching experience and a strong scholarly record.

Research programmes must begin between August 1, 2026, and March 31, 2027, and be completed by December 31, 2027.

Applicants must also be in good health, with successful candidates required to submit a medical history and examination report.

Those who were unsuccessful in earlier competitions may reapply.

The grant covers a monthly stipend (based on the cost of living at the research site), round-trip airfare, professional allowances for books, conferences, and seminars, primary medical insurance, and the visa application fee.
