David Mabuza’s R44.7m life payout heavily contested in the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court
The fight over the late deputy president’s estate is expected to intensify in court today.
The high court is expected to hear a new addition to the application for the late deputy president’s life policy payout today.
The application for a share of the late deputy president David Dabede ‘DD’ Mabuza’s R44.7m life payout is gaining momentum in the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court.
Lowvelder reports that, in addition to the initial claim by one of Mabuza’s daughters, two more of his children and four of his sisters have now joined the application.
Mxolisi David Junior Mabuza and his sister Lindeni Innocentia Mabuza, and their four aunts, are supporting their case.
The first application was brought by Mabuza’s daughter, Tamara Silinda (25), and her mother, Ruth Funi (Emunah) Silinda.
Their application is set to be heard today.
Tamara is seeking interim funding for schooling and living expenses, including R40 000 per month – the amount she says her father gave her while he was alive – and more than R27 000 to cover tuition at the University of Cape Town, where she is a first-year student.
The Silindas are represented by Advocate DJ Sibuyi of Mthunzi Law Chambers.
Asked about the involvement of the two other children and four aunts, Sibuyi said: “I can neither confirm nor deny what you are asking me. Just come to the High Court and listen for yourself tomorrow, I cannot be seen to be undermining the court by revealing issues before they are heard.”
Ruth Silinda was married to Mabuza, and although they were separated at the time of his death on July 3, they never divorced.
At the time of his passing, Mabuza was living with Nonhlahla Patience Mnisi as husband and wife.
She is said to be the sole beneficiary of his estate, though this still requires confirmation.
It is unclear whether the Cat, as Mabuza was affectionately known, left a will, but court documents suggest that Mnisi obtained a posthumous marriage certificate after his death.
More information will be published as it becomes available.
