29 Free State police suicides raise concerns

Troubling SAPS suicide statistics have sparked urgent calls for stronger mental health support and better working conditions for police officers in the Free State.

Alarm bells are ringing in the Free State following figures disclosed by the DA, revealing that 29 SAPS members in the province allegedly took their own lives between 2021 and 2025.

Bloemfontein Courant reports that the statistics, tabled during a sitting of the Free State Legislature, have prompted urgent calls for intervention and a deeper look into the mental health crisis affecting law enforcement.

Following an oversight visit, the DA reported that officers are expected to deliver results while operating with severely inadequate tools – including vehicles, computers, printers and basic equipment – in dilapidated buildings that undermine morale and professionalism.

SAPS has acknowledged the concerns but cautioned that not all cases have been officially confirmed as suicides, with several investigations still ongoing.

Police spokesperson Lorraine Earle says the organisation takes the well-being of its members seriously and outlined the support structures in place. These include regular debriefing sessions, confidential counselling and wellness interventions aimed at early detection of psychological distress.

Earle added that SAPS is actively addressing workplace bullying. “Allegations of bullying or misconduct are dealt with through appropriate internal processes,” she says.

Infrastructure upgrades are also underway, with management working alongside stakeholders to repair facilities and improve access to essential tools. SAPS reiterated its commitment to strengthening wellness programmes and fostering a culture of empathy and accountability.

For communities, however, the debate has laid bare a painful truth: Behind every uniform is a person who also needs care, dignity and support.
