Outrage as eMbalenhle police accused of assault leading to man’s death

eMbalenhle residents protested outside their police station after a man died, allegedly from police assault.

Angry residents of Ward 20 in eMbalenhle gathered at their local police station yesterday, demanding answers after a man was assaulted and killed, allegedly by police officers.

Ridge Times reports that according to several witnesses, the man was seen being assaulted yesterday afternoon, allegedly by members of the police, before being loaded into a police minibus which then sped off.

A concerned community member followed the vehicle to the Extension 4 clinic, where he claims nurses questioned why officers had brought in a man who was already dead.

Residents demanded accountability and waited outside the police station for station commander Colonel Khuselwa Matrose to address them. The gates of the police station had to be locked as tensions escalated.

Matrose told the community the Independent Police Investigative Directorate is investigating the matter.
