Four killed in Mkhondo-Pongola N2 accident
Authorities are investigating after four people, including a pedestrian, died in a crash on the N2 near Mkhondo, with reckless driving cited as a possible cause.
A female pedestrian was among four people who died in a head-on collision on the N2 between Mkhondo and Pongola earlier today, Mpumalanga News reports.
According to Moeti Mmusi, spokesperson of the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison (DCSSL), a light delivery vehicle (LDV) and a sedan collided at around 06:30. Three of the deceased – two men and a woman, including the driver – were occupants of the sedan.
The fourth victim, a woman, was a pedestrian whose body was found near the wreckage of the LDV. All four were declared dead at the scene,” Mmusi said.
The LDV’s male driver and a child passenger sustained serious injuries and were taken to Mkhondo Hospital. Mmusi added that the pedestrian was apparently struck by the LDV after it left the road during the crash.
‘Reckless and negligent driving can’t be ruled out’
“An investigation into the collision is underway, but reckless and negligent driving cannot be ruled out at this stage,” he said.
DCSSL MEC Jackie Macie urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads, “Motorists must always be alert. Every driver must obey the rules and prioritise their own safety and that of other road users to prevent needless loss of life and life-changing injuries,” he said.
He extended his condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
The identities of the deceased have not yet been released.
