Alleged drunk driver smashes into ambulance in uMhlanga, paramedic critically injured

Emergency crews responding to a stabbing incident were caught in further chaos when an allegedly drunk driver ploughed into their parked ambulance.

Durban North police have confirmed that a driver was arrested for alleged drunk driving on Saturday night, after smashing into an ambulance and critically injuring a paramedic.

According to Northglen News, the collision occurred on McCausland Crescent in uMhlanga.

While police were conducting a roadblock near Lighthouse Road, where 26 motorists were arrested for various offences, another driver was taken into custody just a few metres away.

KZN VIP spokesperson Gareth Naidoo says a multi-disciplinary crime prevention operation was already underway in the area when an altercation outside a local venue led to two people being stabbed. Emergency services, including KZN VIP Medics and SAPS, responded swiftly to assist the injured.

“While paramedics were attending to the injured victims, an intoxicated driver crashed into the parked ambulance, causing further injuries to the already injured victims and two medics. One paramedic was critically injured and was partially ejected from the ambulance. Patients were stabilised on scene,” he says.

The driver of the vehicle was detained by SAPS, says Naidoo.
