Home Affairs launches online portal to help South Africans regain citizenship

A new system promises a smoother, fully digital path for South Africans seeking clarity and confirmation of their citizenship status.

The Department of Home Affairs has launched a new online system to help thousands of South Africans confirm or reinstate their citizenship after a landmark Constitutional Court ruling earlier this year.

The Witness reports that the Citizenship Reinstatement Portal, unveiled on Monday, forms part of the department’s broader digital overhaul and follows the Constitutional Court judgment delivered on May 6, which struck down Section 6(1)(a) of the South African Citizenship Act 88 of 1995 as unconstitutional.

For decades, the law had caused South Africans to automatically lose their citizenship if they acquired another nationality without first securing permission from the minister.

The court ruled that the provision violated constitutional rights, confirming an earlier Supreme Court of Appeal decision.

The ruling restored citizenship to everyone who had lost it under the provision since 1995 and declared that affected individuals are legally regarded as never having lost it.

A digital fix for a decades-old problem

Home Affairs said the new portal is designed to streamline the administrative process arising from the ruling, particularly for South Africans who now live abroad and may struggle to access physical Home Affairs offices.

Through the platform, users can verify their status using their ID number, complete biometric checks, and, if necessary, submit a reinstatement request. The system links directly to the National Population Register and allows applicants to track the progress of their case online.

Minister of Home Affairs Dr Leon Schreiber said the portal was one step in rebuilding public trust in the department.

“The Constitutional Court judgment ended decades of uncertainty for thousands of South Africans abroad,” he said.

This new platform ensures that the restoration of their rights is supported by an accessible and secure digital process.

How the portal works

South Africans can access the system via myhomeaffairsonline.dha.gov.za. After registering an account, users are guided through identity verification and document uploads. Those who were not affected by the revoked law will receive instant confirmation that their citizenship remains valid.

Applicants whose citizenship was previously revoked will be routed into a simplified reinstatement process.

Digital modernisation continues

Home Affairs said the roll-out of the reinstatement portal is part of its long-term digital transformation plan, which includes expanding online services, improving identity verification systems and increasing accessibility for citizens abroad.

Schreiber said the department intends to ensure that South Africans ‘have efficient access to dignified services, whether they live at home or internationally’.
