Fatal Friday on SA highways: 8 killed, more than 20 injured in 2 accidents
Two accidents in Limpopo and Mpumalanga claimed the lives of eight people and injured more than 20 yesterday.
Amid rainy weather in widespread parts of the country yesterday, two fatal accidents on the N1 in Limpopo and the N4 in Mpumalanga, claimed the lives of eight people with scores injured. Both highways had to be closed for some time after the accidents.
The Polokwane Review reports that the Limpopo transport department confirmed a multi-vehicle crash on the N1 North, near Makhado yesterday afternoon.
According to information, the crash involved five vehicles including two trucks, a sedan, a bakkie and a 22-seater bus. The department said that preliminary investigations reveal that high speed might have led to drivers losing control, resulting in a head-on collision.
Five people were declared dead at the scene while 22 people sustained injuries.

The Middelburg Observer reports that a collision between a Toyota Hilux and an Opel Corsa bakkie brought the N4 near the Middelburg Dam to a standstill yesterday around 11:30.
Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety and Security Liaison, Moeti Mmusi, said a vehicle travelling towards Gauteng lost control and swerved into the oncoming lane, colliding with the second vehicle.
Three people, the driver, a woman and young boy, died on impact while two young girls were seriously injured. A further three people, the driver of the second vehicle, a woman and a young boy suffered minor injuries.
