Parolee charged after contraband found in Mpumalanga prison visit
A parolee was arrested after drugs and a cellphone were found concealed inside food items during a visit to an inmate at the Standerton Correctional Centre.
A 31-year-old parolee was arrested at the Standerton Correctional Services in Mpumalanga on Sunday in connection with an attempt to smuggle contraband into the prison cells, reports Ridge Times.
According to a statement compiled by Sergeant Thulisile Magagula, the parolee had attempted to smuggle a cellphone and dagga into the facility while visiting a friend who is incarcerated.
Police say the suspect had brought food items, but it was discovered during the visit that a cellphone was concealed in a bag of instant porridge and the dagga was hidden in a plastic bag.
The suspect was arrested and appeared in the Standerton Magistrate’s Court yesterday, facing charges of drug possession and defeating the ends of justice. The court outcome was not known at the time of publishing.
Captain Braam Robberts, the spokesperson for the Standerton SAPS, reminded the public that items are thoroughly searched and any attempts to smuggle illegal items into cells will be met with arrest.
