Buying solo doesn’t mean buying alone
Purchasing a property on your own doesn't mean you have to navigate the journey alone.
For previous generations, buying a home was often seen as a milestone that came after marriage. Today, however, more women are choosing to write their own timelines, purchasing property independently as a way to build financial security, create stability and invest in their future.
In fact, the ABSA Homeowners Sentiment Index found that female applicants accounted for more than half of all first-time homebuyer applications in 2025 as at end September.
While taking that big step alone can feel daunting, Adrian Goslett, CEO and regional director of REMAX Southern Africa, encourages prospective buyers not to let the fear of navigating the process on their own prevent them from starting their property journey.
“Buying your first home can feel overwhelming, regardless of your circumstances, but purchasing solo doesn’t mean you have to figure everything out by yourself. People assume that you need to know everything before you begin when in reality, the right professionals are there to guide you through every stage of the journey.”
A qualified real estate agent can help you identify suitable properties, explain local market conditions, negotiate on your behalf and guide you through every step of the purchasing process. Working with trusted professionals gives you access to expert advice when you need it the most and can answer any questions you might have.
“It’s important to remember that no question is too small when it comes to buying property. Whether it is about transfer costs and levies to occupational rent and municipal rates, understanding the process helps you make the most confident and informed decision,” explains Goslett.
Goslett notes that when you’re buying property on your own, it’s especially important to choose a home that suits both your current lifestyle and your future plans. This includes taking into consideration factors such as commute time, maintenance requirements, security and the property’s long-term resale potential.
“Buying on your own may seem like a big step, but it can also be one of the most empowering decisions you make. The key is remembering that while your name may be the only one on the title deed, you’ll have an entire team of professionals helping you get there,” concludes Goslett.
There is no single path to homeownership. You don’t have to wait for the ‘perfect’ circumstances to invest in your future. When you’re ready to take that first step, a qualified agent can help ensure you never have to take it alone.
