Man arrested after 12-year-old accidentally shot during hunting trip

A Krugersdorp child was fatally shot on a Free State farm, with police investigating and a suspect facing a murder charge.

Police have arrested and charged a man with murder after a 12-year-old girl from Krugersdorp was accidentally shot during a hunting trip at Franshoek Farm near Ficksburg in the Free State.

The accused appeared in the Ficksburg Magistrate’s Court earlier this morning.

According to the Krugersdorp News, Free State police commissioner spokesperson Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiri said the girl’s father and another man were hunting on the farm on Friday morning (May 29) when a firearm was discharged, allegedly by the man, fatally injuring the child.

The girl was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment but was declared dead on arrival at 09:00.

Mophiring said hospital staff reported the incident to police, after which a murder case was opened.

As part of the investigation, all firearms belonging to the man were confiscated and will undergo forensic ballistic testing

Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting are continuing.
