Driver killed after repatriation bus overturns in Limpopo

Eleven passengers were injured when the driver of a bus allegedly lost control of the vehicle on the N1.

A bus transporting individuals from KZN to the repatriation camp in Beitbridge overturned on the N1, approximately 4km south of the Beitbridge Border Post, this morning ( July 1), reports Review Online.

According to preliminary reports from the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle due to fatigue, causing the bus to overturn.

Driver dead, 11 injured

The department’s spokesperson Mashudu Mabata said the driver has been confirmed deceased, while 11 passengers sustained injuries.

“The injured were transported to Musina Hospital for medical treatment. Emergency services, law enforcement agencies and traffic officials are on the scene managing the incident and providing the necessary assistance,” she said.

Road remains open, but delays expected

The road remains open to traffic at this stage.

However, motorists are advised that temporary closures may be implemented to allow forensic investigators to conduct their work safely. Delays should therefore be expected.

“Motorists travelling along the route are urged to exercise extreme caution, reduce speed, maintain a safe following distance, and comply with the instructions of traffic officials on the scene,” said Mabata.
