Major milestone reached in Rand West City mass housing delivery
Government leaders are fast-tracking essential settlements to address regional shortages and restore dignity to local families.
A massive housing drive in Rand West City, Johannesburg, saw 458 families receive the keys to their new properties yesterday (June 30), pushing the total number of homes handed over at the Droogeheuwel Mega Project to 780 for June alone, reports Randfontein Herald.
The official handover ceremony was attended by Human Settlements Minister Thembisile Simelane, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, Human Settlements MEC Tasneem Motara and Rand West City Executive Mayor William Matsheke.
The handover forms part of government’s ongoing efforts to address housing shortages and restore dignity to communities through access to safe, permanent shelter.
A dream realised
The event was met with excitement from beneficiaries, many of whom had waited decades for permanent housing.
Peter Mmetsane, one of the recipients, expressed his joy at finally receiving a home. “I feel blessed and happy after years of waiting to receive an RDP home,” he said.

Another beneficiary, Mmabatho Piliso, was equally overjoyed as officials handed her the keys to her new property.
Speaking at the event, Simelane reaffirmed government’s commitment to accelerating housing delivery across the country. She highlighted that projects such as Droogeheuwel are central to improving living conditions and ensuring that more South Africans have access to safe, decent housing.
Lesufi echoed these sentiments, emphasising that partnerships between national, provincial and local government remain critical to delivering sustainable communities.
Matsheke expressed pride in the progress made within Rand West City, noting that the mega project is transforming lives and reshaping communities. He encouraged residents to take care of their new assets and contribute positively to the development of their neighbourhoods.
The integrated human settlements initiative aims to provide not only housing but also access to essential services and local economic opportunities.
