New beginnings for 458 families at Droogeheuwel

With 780 homes now handed over, the development continues to transform lives across Rand West City.

The dream of owning a home became a reality for 458 qualifying beneficiaries on Tuesday, June 30, as another phase of the Droogeheuwel Mega Project was completed, bringing the total number of homes handed over in June to 780.

The official handover ceremony was attended by the Minister of Human Settlements, Thembisile Simelane, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, MEC for Human Settlements Tasneem Motara and Rand West City Executive Mayor Clr William Matsheke, who joined beneficiaries in celebrating the milestone.

The handover forms part of the government’s ongoing efforts to address housing shortages and restore dignity to communities through access to safe and permanent housing.

Government commits to accelerating housing delivery

Speaking at the handover, Simelane reaffirmed government’s commitment to accelerating housing delivery across the country. She highlighted that projects such as Droogeheuwel are central to improving living conditions and ensuring that more South Africans have access to safe and decent housing.

Lesufi echoed these sentiments, emphasising the Gauteng government’s focus on fast-tracking human settlements projects to meet growing demand. He noted that partnerships between national, provincial and local government remain critical to delivering sustainable communities.

Motara also stressed the importance of quality and efficiency in housing developments, stating that the department is working tirelessly to ensure projects are completed on time and meet the required standards.

Matsheke expressed pride in the progress made within Rand West City, noting that the Droogeheuwel Mega Project is transforming lives and reshaping communities. He also encouraged residents to take care of their new homes and contribute positively to the development of their neighbourhoods.

Building sustainable communities

The project forms part of a broader initiative aimed at creating integrated human settlements that provide not only housing, but also access to essential services and economic opportunities.

For many beneficiaries, Tuesday’s handover was more than just receiving a house – it marked the beginning of a new chapter and a step towards a better future.
