Aggressive buffalo bull shot dead in Marloth Park after charging rangers

A buffalo that managed to break through the Kruger National Park veterinary fence was put down after storming wildlife officials.

An aggressive buffalo bull was shot dead in Marloth Park, Mpumalanga, yesterday (July 2) after repeatedly charging rangers and their vehicles.

Lowvelder reports the lone bull managed to break through the veterinary fence separating Marloth Park from the Kruger National Park. It is suspected the animal might have lost its way or fled from lions, breaching the perimeter through one of the many ditches running beneath the fence.

Marloth Park rangers and a state veterinarian from Hectorspruit attempted to herd the buffalo into Lionspruit because it posed an immediate danger to residents and tourists. However, the animal turned aggressive and charged officials on numerous occasions.

Because the local veterinarian was unavailable to assist with darting the animal, officials had to change their strategy.

“Due to the dangerous situation, the rangers had no option other than to put the animal down,” Wild and Free Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre’s DeidrĂ© Joubert says.
