Chaos in Katlehong: Community leader shot during anti-immigration protests

A crowd targeted a local spaza shop in Greenfields and faced off against law enforcement following an attack on activist Andile Somgxada.

Tensions are running high in Greenfields, Katlehong, after a community leader at the forefront of recent anti-illegal immigration marches was shot yesterday morning (4 July).

Community members at the scene confirmed that Andile Somgxada was taken to hospital for treatment following the incident, reports the Alberton Record.

The shooting prompted furious residents to take to the streets in protest.

A local spaza shop was targeted, with demonstrators clearing out the business’s stock and placing it on the pavement outside. This followed allegations that the person responsible for the shooting was a foreign national.

Tumelo Ndamane, one of the march leaders, told the newspaper that the community had been left deeply shocked by the attack.

The situation became increasingly volatile after police arrived at the scene and attempted to disperse the crowd and arrest several protesters. Some community members resisted arrest, accusing officers of failing to take action against foreign nationals.

As the confrontation escalated, police fired rubber bullets to disperse the demonstrators. A heavy police presence, including officers from the Eden Park and Springs SAPS, remains in the area while authorities work to maintain order.
