A 34-year-old man is expected to appear at the Durban Magistrate’s Court today (July 17) on charges of attempted murder, reports Southlands Sun.

It is alleged that the suspect had an argument with his ex-girlfriend yesterday (July 16) after which he went to the victim’s home on The Bluff where he stabbed her multiple times.

According to the police, the victim’s daughter (16) who was in the house when the alleged incident happened sustained an injury to her arm. She was rushed to hospital for treatment and was later discharged.

The suspect, whose name is withheld until he appears in court, is allegedly a Burundi national and a pastor.

Police spokesperson for eThekwini District, Captain Carmen Rhynes, said a resident from The Bluff, who witnessed the incident, went to the Brighton Beach police station to alert the police.

“It is alleged that a member of the community approached Brighton Beach police station to report that she had heard her neighbour screaming for help. Upon investigation the victim was found with multiple stab wounds,” said Rhynes.

Emergency medical services were summoned, and the victim was transported to hospital, where she remains in a critical condition.

“The suspect later handed himself over to the Brighton Beach police station. He had sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital for medical treatment before being released into police custody. A case of attempted murder has been registered for investigation. Investigations are continuing,” Rhynes added.

The incident has sparked anger among members of the community while some have vented their anger on social media platforms calling for justice.

According to a Facebook post by the leader of the March and March movement, Jacinta MaNgobese-Zuma, the suspect is a pastor of a church on The Bluff that was previously shut down.

“The Burundi pastor (suspect) and the [victim] were in a relationship a year ago. She went to get a protection order against him. After a while he started calling her again [claiming] that he knows she had ended the relationship because her brother supported the March and March movement,” said MaNgobese-Zuma in the post.

According to the post this allegedly angered him the most, and he allegedly wanted to assault her.

It is also alleged that the victim is related to a KZN comedian who openly pledged his support for the March and March in June 30.

The March and March is a movement that advocates for stricter border control, mass deportation and the enforcement of immigration laws against illegal foreign nationals.

At the time of publication, the victim remained in hospital and was reportedly in a critical condition.
