Rabie Ridge police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of an unidentified man found in an abandoned mining area in Klipfontein, near Midrand.

According to the Midrand Reporter, divers from Johannesburg water policing and diving services were deployed to a drowning scene at the corner of Masala Road in Klipfontein, near Rabie Ridge, on Tuesday (August 4) at around 20:00.

Gauteng police emergency services media liaison officer Raymond Sambo said that, upon arrival, the diving team recovered the body of an unidentified man from the stream inside the abandoned mineshaft.

“The body was handed over to Rabie Ridge police members at the scene, and an inquest docket was opened for further investigation.” The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.

Police urge caution around open water

Sambo urged residents to exercise extreme caution around rivers, dams, streams, and other open bodies of water to prevent avoidable tragedies.

“Individuals venturing into dams, rivers, or any water for any activity are advised to do so only with a life jacket. Parents of young children near open waters should educate them about the associated dangers, and ensure constant supervision.”
