Man back in court in Vryheid after allegedly killing girlfriend following WhatsApp discovery
A woman allegedly discovered her mother’s body under a tarpaulin in the back of a bakkie after the vehicle reportedly ran out of petrol in rural KZN.
A 38-year-old man is expected back in the Vryheid Magistrate’s Court on August 25 for a formal bail application after allegedly attacking and strangling his girlfriend in Mondlo, about 30km outside Vryheid in northern KZN, reports
Man allegedly discovers affair through WhatsApp messages
According to police, the incident took place on Women’s Day (August 9). It is alleged that the man contacted his girlfriend and told her he was going to take her on a date to Mondlo Mall.
At about 11:30, he arrived at her home in Block B, Mondlo, and allegedly went through her cellphone, where police say he discovered WhatsApp messages suggesting she was having an affair with another man.
Woman attacked and strangled
Police allege that en route to Mondlo Mall, he stopped near a horse-racing area in One Line Madressini and attacked the woman with a spanner before allegedly strangling her with a rope.
It is alleged that he then put the woman’s body in the back of the bakkie and covered it with a tarpaulin, before returning to her home to pick up her adult daughter.
Daughter discovers mother’s body
It is believed the vehicle ran out of petrol while travelling in the direction of the Maboom Mountains. When the man went to get petrol, leaving the daughter in the bakkie, it is alleged that she discovered her mother’s body and fled.
She managed to flag down a passing police van on the nearby main road and reported the discovery to the officers.
The man was subsequently arrested in connection with the woman’s death.
