Family offers R20 000 reward after Durban e-hailing driver killed

A father of five was found with multiple stab wounds after a crash, prompting his family to call for justice and greater safety for e-hailing drivers.

For Nhlakanipho Sandile Mncube’s family, the 36-year-old was more than an e-hailing driver. He was a qualified conveyancing attorney and accountant, an ambitious man whose intelligence and determination inspired those around him, reports Northglen News.

His death has left his family devastated and asking for justice.

Mncube was found with stab wounds to his body after a car crash on Monday night, (August, 17) on Effingham Road, near Chris Hani Road in Greenwood Park, Durban.

According to Greenwood Park SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Basha Nyembe, Mncube sustained multiple stab wounds to his upper body.

“The victim was stabbed multiple times on his back and abdomen. We are investigating a murder case and the family has offered a substantial reward for anyone who has information that will lead to an arrest and conviction,” said Nyembe.

Mncube, who hailed from Ntuzuma F Section, had turned to e-hailing after his career as a conveyancing attorney was derailed about five years ago.

His brother-in-law, Sihle Nzuza, said e-hailing was initially meant to be a temporary means of earning an income while Mncube worked to clear his name and rebuild his career. Instead, it became his livelihood as he worked to provide for his family.

“Sandile was the person the adults were proud of and the younger children looked up to in the family. His ambition motivated his nieces and nephews. He was intelligent and had a brilliant mind,” said Nzuza.

“He was a die-hard Kaizer Chiefs fan. I can’t believe we are now speaking of him in the past tense.”

For Mncube’s family, his death has underscored the dangers faced by e-hailing drivers as they work to provide for their families.

“We are aware that e-hailing drivers are often victims of crime and this must come to an end. We want the law to take its course and for justice to be served. Sandile was a brilliant young man who still had so much he wanted to achieve. Our family has been robbed of watching his greatness,” said Nzuza.

“We want to set an example and make it known that the senseless murders of e-hailing drivers will not be tolerated. They are people with families just trying to make a living. We are offering a R20 000 reward for any information that will lead to an arrest and conviction.”

Mncube leaves behind five children, his parents, brothers, a sister, and a host of relatives and friends who remember him as a driven, intelligent and caring family man.

He will be laid to rest at Etafuleni Cemetery following a church service at the Ntuzuma F Section community hall.

Police are appealing to anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward.

Information can be provided to Detective Sergeant Rishen Govender on 084 667 4498.
