A reliable source close to the investigation confirmed that decomposed remains discovered on a Boskraai smallholding in the north of Pretoria belong to missing 53-year-old Allan Whelan.

According to Pretoria Rekord police have arrested one person in connection with the case and are believed to be searching for a second suspect linked to the murder.

According to the source, Whelan’s vehicle, which was allegedly sold after his disappearance, was recovered yesterday (September 3).

Police could not immediately confirm the arrest or the vehicle’s recovery, stating they were unable to provide further information.

Witness leads police to shallow grave

Whelan was last seen in the Pretoria North area between midnight on Friday, August 21, and about 03:00 on Saturday, August 22, before Akasia SAPS opened a missing-person case.

Pretoria North police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk previously said police received information at about 08:00 on Wednesday (September 2) about a body allegedly buried at a smallholding in Boskraai.

Search dogs locate decomposed remains

Search-and-rescue dogs were deployed and identified an area where a body was suspected to have been buried, leading officers to excavate the site and discover the decomposed remains.

Van Dyk said a witness identified during the preliminary investigation confirmed the location of the grave and told police the deceased had visited the smallholding in his vehicle.

Further information indicated that the vehicle was allegedly sold in Pretoria West.

The murder investigation is continuing, with police following all available leads.
