Aircraft grounded at Eastern Cape airport after bomb threat

A multi-disciplinary team, including the Bomb Disposal Unit, has been deployed to the King Phalo Airport after an anonymous tip about a bomb threat.

An aircraft has landed at King Phalo Airport, formerly known as East London Airport, following a reported bomb threat today (October 21).

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said a call was received from an unknown person using a private number, alleging the presence of a bomb on the aircraft.

“The aircraft is currently being held as part of standard security protocols,” she said.

“All 184 passengers on board have safely disembarked.”

She said a multi-disciplinary response team, including the Bomb Disposal Unit, K9 Explosives Detection Dogs and hostage negotiators, is at the scene.

“The scene is being managed by the relevant authorities, and investigations into the origin of the threat are ongoing,” said Gantana.

“No further information is available at this stage.”

Gantana urged the public not to speculate and to let security agencies do their work without interference.
