Update at 12:00

Residents across Potchefstroom, Promosa and Ikageng came out in numbers to exercise their democratic right as voting got underway in the 2026 Local Government Elections, reports Potchefstroom Herald.

In the Bult area (ward 7 and 22) various students and young people pitched up and did not mind a relatively long line, as long as they could cast their vote.

The Potchefstroom Herald spoke to several voters about their reasons for casting their ballots, with residents highlighting the importance of having their voices heard and playing an active role in shaping the future of their communities.

“I voted today, because it is important to see change in our town,” said Wianco Blom.

“It is important that we stand united as a country. It is important to vote for a party in our municipality that serves us,” says Erwin Meyer (22).

Thabang Maloka (20) said that it is time for change and that he voted to give other parties a chance to govern.

Mthobeli Mzobotshe added that there are many things that needs to change.

“My hope is that my vote can help bring an end to crime and corruption.”

The JB Marks Local Municipality is on a tipping edge this election with various opposition parties gunning to take over from the African National Congress. Political commentators are also of the opinion that coalitions could also be a possibility.

North West Premier Lazarus Mokgosi urges voters to head to polls

North West Premier Lazarus Kagiso Mokgosi has urged eligible voters across the province to turn out in large numbers and exercise their democratic right as South Africa heads to the polls today.

According to a post on the official Facebook page of the Office of the Premier – North West Province, Mokgosi emphasised the importance of active public participation in strengthening democracy, saying every vote counts and gives residents an opportunity to shape the future of their communities.

He encouraged young people, first-time voters and all eligible residents not to become complacent, highlighting the role elections play in promoting accountability, development and good governance.

Call for peaceful voting

The premier also called for peaceful elections, urging voters, political parties and supporters to respect differing views and avoid intimidation, violence or any disruption to the electoral process.

“Let us make our voices heard through the ballot box and not through conflict,” he said.
