Dagga, alcohol, knives found at high school

Police have seized dagga, alcohol, cigarettes and knives while conducting a raid at a KwaZulu-Natal high school.

The objects and substances were found hidden in classrooms at Clairwood Secondary School on Thursday, Southlands Sun reported.

“By doing these searches, we’re showing the pupils we are aware of drugs. We want to ensure schools remain crime-free,” said Captain Priscilla Ellappen.

“Any other items we found, such as pornographic material or gambling equipment, was confiscated.”

Clairwood Secondary School principal Yugan Naidoo welcomed the police presence at the school.

“Montclair police are always prompt in attending to problems at the school. I’d like to thank them for their service,” said Naidoo.

In January, a Pretoria school requested parents of the pupils who tested positive during a surprise drug raid to be placed in rehabilitation programmes.

The raid was conducted at Hillview High School by the Wonderboompoort and Tshwane Metro police in an attempt to rid the school of illegal substances.

Wonderboompoort police spokesperson Warrant Officer Wanda Olivier said four classrooms and 120 pupils were searched.

“One tested positive for methadone and amphetamines, which could be the result of medication, but the pupil confirmed he had not used any medication. Four other pupils tested positive for dagga,” said Olivier.

No weapons were found during the search.
