Liars will be jailed – police

Police have taken a stand against those who open false cases or lie when making statements.

This after a 32-year-old woman was arrested recently for perjury and defeating the ends of justice when she allegedly lied and misled police, Rekord East reported.

The woman was arrested after her husband opened a case of kidnapping at the Sunnyside Police Station in Pretoria in December last year.

The woman’s husband believed his wife had been kidnapped by her ex-husband.

Police investigations revealed the woman was not kidnapped, but had been spending time with her ex-husband by choice.

Sunnyside police spokesperson Asnath Malatsi said investigators found the woman was happy, and there were no signs that she had been kidnapped.

“Video footage shows the woman happy when out with her ex-husband,” Malatsi said.

This evidence was contrary to the woman’s statement that she had been intoxicated and could not remember anything.

“While she claimed she could not remember anything, she remembered her bank card pin code when she was withdrawing money by herself at ATMs,” Malatsi said.

Police said the woman in question claimed to have been locked up in a room while she was out and about.

She was arrested at her workplace in Hatfield and would appear in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court soon.

Police have arrested a number of people for lying and opening false cases.

In January, a 35-year-old man was arrested and charged with perjury and defeating the ends of justice after he spun an elaborate story to cover up the loss of his employer’s vehicle.

The man claimed he had gone to a garage to buy mielie-meal and stopped at a Pick ‘n Pay to buy meat before being hijacked.

After an interrogation, the man eventually confessed he had been drinking heavily in Randburg and woke up the next morning with no memory of what had happened.

In the same month, a man accused of lying to the police appeared in the Marikana Periodical Court in the North West.

Police said Dingaan Makola (21) had opened a business robbery case at the Marikana Police Station, claiming that his tavern in Rankelenyane Village was robbed.

Investigators later discovered the complainant had faked the robbery.
