Armed robbers storm WesBank
More arrests are expected after robbers stormed an MTN shop inside the WesBank building on Beyers Naude Drive in the north of Johannesburg this morning.
Speaking to The Citizen, an eyewitness said the suspects entered the building and opened fire.
One person was injured after being hit on the head with a gun.
“The suspects got away with three bags. As they got to the boom gate, it was closed. So they got out of the car, leaving the bags behind, and ran away,” said the eyewitness.
“One of the assailants, an overweight guy who couldn’t run, was caught outside.”
Police spokesperson Constable Michael Kgatla confirmed four of the seven suspects were arrested.
“One was arrested outside the bank, while three others were later arrested,” he said.
One of the arrested suspects was shot by security officers, Northcliff Melville Times reported.
“Three other suspects fled the scene in a Quantum, which they abandoned at a Gordon Road intersection when the traffic light turned red while police gave chase,” said Kgatla, who added that a shootout ensued at that point.
WesBank said its Wellness team would be on site to assist any staff member who may require trauma counselling following the incident.
“Rest assured that our security will review the event in detail to improve on the security protocol,” said the bank.
