DNA links rape accused to another case

A 28-year-old man has been arrested after being linked by means of DNA evidence to a rape in KwaMukhutha, KwaZulu-Natal and a house robbery in Amazimtoti, KwaZulu-Natal two years ago.

“On February 19, the suspect appeared in Umbumbulu Court on a rape charge, which occurred in KwaMakhutha. He was linked through DNA to the [Amanzimtoti] case,” police spokesperson Captain Charlene van der Spuy told South Coast Sun.

In the Amanzimtoti incident, which occurred on February 19, 2013, a woman was alone at home when three men allegedly kicked down her front door.

The woman claimed the men raped her, robbed her and fled. Cases of house robbery and rape were opened and investigated by Amanzimtoti detective Warrant Officer KD Zungu.

The arrested man was later denied bail and is due in court today for a regional court date to be set.

Police investigations revealed the man’s accomplices had since died.

The introduction of the DNA bill into law was said to have resulted in more criminals being caught.

During a panel discussion in Johannesburg last year, rape survivor Lindie Mdlulie said DNA would be a conclusive factor when rape victims cannot speak for themselves in court.

The bill, which allows police to take a DNA sample from suspected criminals, was passed by the National Assembly in 2013.
