Thousands sign petition for action over ‘dangerous’ Centurion road

Just under 4 000 signatures were received to get the Gauteng roads department to implement safety measures on a “dangerous” stretch of Centurion road, Rekord Centurion reports.

The petition will be presented to the Gauteng provincial legislature.

The petition, started by ward councillor Marika Kruger-Muller, was aimed at drawing attention to Ruimte Road, which was “putting the lives of residents in danger”.

Kruger-Muller said the petition has images, data and statistics on accidents gathered over the past month.

“Using this information with the signatures, we want to call the legislature to act on this dangerous road,” she said.

“We have managed to gather a large amount of data on the issues surrounding Ruimte Road.”

Kruger-Muller promised to provide residents with feedback once the legislature decides on the way forward.

Residents recently highlighted a spate of accidents in Ruimte Road over the past months.

Kruger-Muller previously said the main issue appeared to be a lack of proper traffic signs indicating what speeds were allowed and a lack of arrows at traffic signals making for dangerous situations.

“Motorists travelling well above 120km/h come speeding over intersections where motorists are attempting to turn.

“There have been so many collisions and we need action on this fast.”

The petition requests the Gauteng roads department to install average speed road signs along Ruimte Road from Voortrekker Road (R55) to the Old Johannesburg Road (R101).
