Police officer shot and killed during attempted robbery

An off-duty police officer reportedly succumbed to his injuries, while a suspect was shot during an attempted robbery on Mitchell Street and Honeyball Avenue, Roodepoort, Gauteng.

According to eyewitnesses, the police officer, believed to be in his 40s, was washing his vehicle when he was allegedly confronted by four suspects in his yard on Monday, Roodepoort Recordreported.

“After being shot, he managed to chase the suspects towards Honeyball Avenue Golf Club Terrace and shot one of them in the arm. The officer allegedly succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the nearby Discovery Clinic.

“The injured suspect’s shirt and firearm were recovered at the gate of one of the houses on Honeyball Avenue,” said the eyewitness.

The injured suspect was assessed and transported to Leratong Hospital under police guard.

Two other suspects were arrested on the scene. The fourth suspect got away during the earlier chase.

Florida police spokesperson Lydia Dikolomela could not divulge the identity of the officer, as his next of kin had not yet been informed of his death.

Earlier this month, a police officer was shot dead at his home in Mfume, Umlazi, in KwaZulu-Natal.

It is alleged Captain Sithole’s wife told police she had been busy in the kitchen at about 8pm when she heard a knock on the door. When she opened up, three men entered, asked for her husband, drew firearms and told her to be quiet.

Amazimtoti police communications officer Captain Charlene van der Spuy said two of the men went to her husband, who was in a rondavel. She heard a gunshot and him screaming. He sustained a fatal wound to the chest. The men fled in a blue vehicle after stealing a flat screen TV, laptop, cellphone and keys to the car.
