Hospital death: Riveshan Pandather’s family speaks out

The family of 19-year-old Rivesgan Pandather, a KwaZulu-Natal teen who died after allegedly being denied treatment at two government hospitals, are looking to ensure his death was not in vain.

His older brother, Vernon, 24, said their parents, George, 54, and Indrani, 52, were struggling to come to terms with their young son’s death, Phoenix Sun reported.

“As a family, we are shattered. Hearing of the circumstances surrounding my brother’s untimely death, we are in a state of shock. We cannot believe that his final moments were compromised in such a manner,” the brother said.

The teen was allegedly knocked down by a vehicle on the R102 on Saturday. Critically injured, he was allegedly refused treatment by the hospitals in Phoenix, Verulam and the Durban CBD before succumbing to his injuries.

Two doctors and a nurse have since been suspended from Osindisweni and Mahatma Gandhi Hospitals, KwaZulu-Natal health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo announced on Tuesday.

Vernon added his brother should have been treated, stabilised and then transferred to the relevant hospital in the area instead of being denied treatment.

“As a family we will follow up on this matter to the highest level to ensure that justice is served. My brother’s death will not go in vain. Other patients in similar situations should not have to suffer the same fate that he did,” Vernon said.

“Riveshan was the baby in our family. He was kind and caring and had hopes for a bright future. It’s a future he will now never know, as his life was snuffed out so callously,” he added.
