Taxi flies into car dealership, driver flees
Commuters driving down Jan Smuts Avenue in Johannesburg witnessed a peculiar scene on Monday morning as a taxi landed on top of another vehicle at a car dealership.
Cuan Gouws, manager of the used cars division at the branch, said the incident took place between 11pm and midnight last night, Rosebank Killarney Gazette reported.
“My big boss called me with the news that a taxi had ramped up and landed on to one of our vehicles [a Volkswagen Tieguan ] at close to midnight,” said Gouws.
Security companies ADT, Chub and CSS Tactical responded to the accident after the branch’s night guard sounded the alarm.
According to Gouws, the suspect ran away, leaving the keys in the taxi and taking the back number plate with him.
The damage to the VW Tieguan is thought to be in the region of R240 000. No injuries were reported.
In a similar incident, a car “flew” into a house in KwaMakhutha township, south of Durban, earlier this month.
According to ER24 paramedics, when they arrived on the scene they found nobody was injured. Witnesses in the area said “the car was flying”, South Coast Sun reported.
“One person who was sleeping in the house was woken up by the car falling on the house,” ER24 spokesperson Pieter Rossouw said.
The driver of the vehicle explained he drove over a “ramp” of some sort, which led him to crash into the house.
