Five suspects due in court for possession of gold soil
Five suspects have been arrested after they were found in possession of gold soil in Krugersdorp, on the West Rand.
Krugersdorp police spokesperson Constable Tshepiso Mashale told The Citizen it is alleged police were doing their normal patrols on Thursday when noticed a suspicious vehicle on the road.
“They approached the vehicle and found the suspects busy loading the gold soil inside the vehicle. Some suspects ran away.
“Police received information that the gold soil was stolen at a mine around Krugersdorp. The arrested suspects will appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrates`s Court soon facing charges of possession of gold soil.
In a separate incident, thirty-seven of 40 miners rescued at an illegal mine in Florida, on the West Rand, were arrested January.
“So far, about 40 miners have been rescued. Two of them were injured and one was [found] dead, so 37 have been arrested,” said Colonel Noxolo Kweza.
They were charged with trespassing, illegally being in possession of precious metals, and entering the country without proper documentation.
