Mpumalanga hospital launches probe into patient’s murder
The Mpumalanga health department is conducting investigations into the alleged stabbing and killing of a 28-year-old patient by another patient at Evander Hospital, in Mpumalanga, yesterday.
The department’s spokesperson, Dumisani Malamule, said a preliminary investigation revealed the suspect fatally wounded the victim with a drip stand and proceeded to assault another patient and a male nurse at about 2.30pm. The first patient died of his wounds, while the male nurse and the other patient escaped unharmed.
“It remains unclear as to what led to the attack and if the suspect is mentally ill. The suspect will undergo mental observations to establish if he is mentally stable,” Malamule added.
Both patients were sharing a ward and had been reportedly admitted on Tuesday, July 21. Reasons for their admission are not yet known.
Malamule said the department viewed the matter in a serious light. The department would like to send condolences to the bereaved family.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Sibusiso Mbuli said the suspect has not been arrested, as police and the hospital are busy with investigations. A case of murder has been opened.
