‘Helpful’ burglars take goods worth R3m

Three armed robbers allegedly broke into a house in Alberton, Gauteng, held the owner and his family captive and, while stealing goods said to be worth about R3 million, managed to kindly bring the daughter her asthma machine and medicine.

Last Friday, Sam Mhangwani, 73, his daughter Mngomezulu Abrahams, grandson Sipesihle Abrahams and domestic worker Thozama were tied up for hours in his bedroom at a complex on Vlei Street, in South Crest, before help arrived from a passerby who heard their cries for help,Alberton Record reported.

The suspects allegedly took two hours to finish their operation and, before fleeing, advised the grandson to never get involved in the crime they had just committed.

“[The robbers] ransacked my entire bedroom looking for valuables,” Mhangwani said.

“I am so upset about the fact that they have taken my watch collection. I have collected several of these watches during my overseas trips.”

He said at about 2am, he was awakened by three men who switched on his bedroom lights and immediately explained to him he would not be harmed if he kept quiet.

“The robbers were in no hurry at all,” he added.

“They helped themselves to liquor, food and even groceries while they searched the house for about two and a half hours before fleeing the scene in three of our cars at about 4.30am.”

“They locked us up in the room and took our home keys and gate remotes with them but forgot a bag with their break-in tools,” he said.

CPS Security was also on the scene, together with the police, to provide any assistance that might be needed.

Alberton police spokesperson Sergeant Phora Nkuna said the robbers gained access to the house through an aluminium window.

They took three cars — an ML Mercedes Benz, an SL Mercedes Benz and a Volkswagen Polo Vivo — together with electrical appliances, clothing and money.

Nkuna said no one was injured and no arrests had been made.
