Tshwane metro encourages residents to ‘Discover Tshwane’

The Tshwane metro is encouraging its residents to go out and discover the city by visiting its tourist attractions.

Economic development and spatial planning MMC Bruce Lee said Tshwane offered many fine heritage sites, museums and art galleries.

“Thousands of people visit our city every year to experience our many landmarks, heritage sites, and other places of important historical, cultural, architectural and natural significance.

“These include the Union Buildings and its spectacular gardens, Voortrekker monument and Freedom Park. Other must-sees include the Botanical Gardens, the zoo, and museums and galleries such as Melrose House, the Pioneer museum, Sammy Marks museum and the Ditsong national museum of natural history.”

Lee said because of the Covid-19 pandemic, visitors were increasingly looking for social-distanced spaces and activities.

He said Tshwane’s many public parks, nature reserves and other outdoor facilities offered the perfect respite from the hustle-and-bustle of business of the central business district and urban districts.

“You don’t need to go very far to experience tranquil country settings like the quaint mining village of Cullinan which is popular with bikers, families and adventure enthusiasts looking to escape to the country.

“Here, the largest gem-quality diamond in the world was discovered and the mine continues to produce some of the rarest diamonds today.”

He said the Covid-19 pandemic has had a devastating effect on the metro’s local tourism industry, and at the height of the lockdowns, several businesses had to close temporarily or permanently.

“The metro, through our tourism division, has invested in marketing campaigns throughout the pandemic to keep the destination and its offerings, top of mind in the market.

“We provide free marketing tools to the industry to boost the visibility of their tourism products. Tourism businesses are encouraged to sign up for these tools on our website www.discovertshwane.com.

“We are currently preparing to host prestigious international events in sports and the research/development sector such as the World Rowing Masters Regatta to be held at Roodeplaat dam in 2023, as well as the 25th World Association of Industrial Technological and Research Organisations general assembly,” said Lee.

“These are events that are both coming to the African continent for the first time in their history, and we are proud that the city of Tshwane will be the proud official host.”

He said they would like to encourage residents to get out there and discover Tshwane.

“In this way they will be supporting the economic recovery of our tourism and hospitality businesses as well. Our residents have the benefit of exploring a world-class tourism destination right on their doorstep, and those from neighbouring cities don’t have to go far to enjoy a holiday getaway.

“A visit to Tshwane is a visit to the whole country, really – you will meet our diverse and friendly people and the world through our diplomatic community. You can experience the coveted African outdoors experience in our many nature and game reserves, and you can trace our dramatic history and our walk to freedom in our fine museums and heritage sites.

“As spring has sprung, we’ll be celebrating the blossoming of the Jacaranda trees.”
