Are the automotive guidelines for competition beneficial?

Opting for the lowest price may not always be the wisest choice for automotive services. Discover how adherence to automotive guidelines impacts the industry.

Since implementing the Guidelines for Competition in the South African automotive aftermarket, consumers have enjoyed increased freedom to explore different service providers in search of the most competitive options.

Dewald Ranft, chairman of the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA), asserts that these guidelines have fostered a fairer environment for motorists grappling with escalating vehicle maintenance costs amid economic challenges.

Selecting the right service provider is paramount, with accreditation and ratings playing a crucial role. “Accredited workshops adhere to minimum criteria and set standards, ensuring quality workmanship and providing recourse in case of unsatisfactory service,” explains Ranft.

Accreditation involves a comprehensive audit covering various aspects such as health and safety protocols, premises, equipment, staffing, and customer guarantees. This rigorous process ensures that customers deal with professionals and have avenues for recourse if needed.

Furthermore, accredited workshops boast highly skilled mechanics, superior service levels, and access to quality parts and equipment. Staff training is also a focal point, addressing the prevalent skills shortage by requiring workshops to demonstrate sufficient training and qualifications among their personnel.

In addition to meeting stringent standards for tools, diagnostic equipment, and insurance, accredited workshops offer peace of mind through association support in the event of service disputes.

Following accreditation, workshops undergo a grading process, akin to the hospitality industry’s star-rating system. This independent evaluation considers workshop design, customer satisfaction, and service offerings. Ranft highlights the benefits of this system, providing transparency and helping customers identify top-tier service providers.

As Ranft underscores, owning a vehicle entails significant financial investment making it crucial to choose a trusted repairer who offers quality service at reasonable prices. With over 2 500 accredited MIWA workshops nationwide, consumers have a wide array of reputable options to consider.

In conclusion, adherence to automotive guidelines and accreditation processes ensures transparency, quality assurance, and consumer protection in the automotive aftermarket.
