Spiced cherry bourbon sour

This spiced cherry bourbon sour blends cherries, bourbon and lemon into a bold cocktail that feels right at home on chilly evenings indoors.

Cherries are not only for summer spritzers. Their deep colour and natural sweetness make them perfect for cold weather. When muddled fresh, they release juice, subtle tartness and a slight almond note that pairs beautifully with darker spirits. In this version, bourbon brings warmth and depth with notes of caramel and oak.

Prep: 10 minutes | Serves: 2

Ingredients

  • 100 ml bourbon
  • 1 cup fresh cherries, pitted
  • 40 ml fresh lemon juice
  • 20 ml simple syrup, adjust to taste
  • Ice
  • Extra cherries and lemon slices, to garnish
  • Sugar, for rimming the glasses

Method

  1. Lightly moisten the rims of two glasses with lemon juice, then dip into sugar to coat. Set aside.
  2. Add the fresh cherries to a cocktail shaker and muddle until juicy.
  3. Pour in the bourbon, lemon juice and simple syrup.
  4. Fill with ice and shake well until chilled.
  5. Strain into the prepared glasses filled with fresh ice.
  6. Garnish with whole cherries and a slice of lemon. Serve immediately.

Easy variations

  • Make it warmer: Add a pinch of ground cinnamon or a dash of bitters to deepen the spice profile for colder nights.
  • Turn it into a hot serve: Skip the ice and gently warm the cherry, bourbon and lemon mixture in a small saucepan before serving in heatproof glasses.
  • Go darker: Swap bourbon for dark rum for a richer, slightly molasses-style twist.
  • Add fizz: Top with a splash of soda water if you prefer something lighter.
